- W70051992 abstract "A computer program called WELL-SIM has been developed as a means of evaluating drilling strategies by testing scenarios in a ''what if'' fashion. The program provides the user with the ability to simulate rotary drilling. The use of drilling simulators to train employees in the development of drilling strategies is a relatively new development. Chevron Corp. uses an actual drilling rig as a simulator to train its employees. Amoco has a drilling simulator in use as a component of its drilling data acquisition and analysis facility in Tulsa, Okla. These two approaches represent the two extremes in the types of simulators presently in use in the industry. Chevron operates a full-scale drilling rig as an analog simulator for the training of its employees. The Amoco simulator is used for making decisions on drilling strategies and is a set of computer programs linked to a large data base of drilling data. There can be an overlap between these two simulation approaches. A training function can be performed by a computer model which presents reports and data in the same format as is commonly presented at a drilling site, e.g., by requiring the user to make the same decision in the samemore » chronological order as would be required by actual drilling. Insight into the decision-making process can be obtained by analyzing the performance of a skilled drilling team as it works on an analog rig.« less" @default.
