- W70290465 abstract "ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT Israelis and Palestinians: Why do They Fight? by Bernard Wasserstein. New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 2003. x + 176 pages. Maps. Chron. to p. 192. Notes to p. 207. Sel. bibl. to p. 214. Index to p. 226. $25. Professor Bernard Wasserstein, newly of the University of Chicago, does not engage in indirection or circumlocution. From the subtitle of his new book on, he zeroes in on the main issues that have fueled the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, showing that they have been at the center of the struggle since modern Zionist settlement began in the late 19th century. With an impressive use of graphs and statistics as well as articulate explanation, he takes the reader through the most important issues that have separated the two sides and, without being pollyana-ish, allows us to draw the conclusions that these issues can, nay must, be solvable. It is simply not in the interest of the majority, nor the leadership, of either side, let alone the interested international community, to allow the conflict to continue when the solutions are there. While generally not pointing out chapter and verse of what those solutions are likely to be, Wasserstein, like many liberally-inclined analysts, makes clear that he believes that some version of the Taba non-agreements of December, 2000-January, 2001 would probably fit the bill, as the near-agreement at that time addressed the real, long-term needs of both sides. The book is divided into five meta-categories of People (e.g., demography), Society, Environment, Territory, and a final chapter, entitled Dynamics of Political Change, which neatly summarizes the relevant moves towards peace. The societal descriptions are clearly more complete and richer when it comes to Jews and Israelis than to Palestinians, which is understandable from a scholar whose main field has been modern Jewish history. Palestinian dynamics, though fairly described and analyzed, receive shorter shrift, and fewer Palestinian sources and commentators are cited. And it is clearly Wasserstein's objective to show that, although Israel has the upper hand in power and resources, the consequences of continuation of the de facto occupation, bad as they are for the Palestinians, will grow more and more onerous for Israel as well. The book lacks, however, sufficient analysis of the hot-button issues of Jerusalem and right of return, which are included somewhat cursorily in the last chapter. They are treated as problems over which rational people can agree, as well as disagree and, as such, inherently subject to reason. Wasserstein correctly points out that the tenets of neither Judaism nor Islam preclude some form of division of both Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, and that the religious perspective has generally not dominated in either Palestinian or Jewish nationalism. …" @default.
