- W70316413 abstract "Effective medical leadership is increasingly recognized as essential for improving the performances of health services and enhancing the wellbeing of patients and the quality of outcomes. The postgraduate training in Medical Administration has been conducted by the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine of Sri Lanka since 1995 and this case study traces the development of postgraduate training in Medical Administration in Sri Lanka.The objective of the study was to describe the postgraduate training for the development of medical administrative leaders in Sri Lanka. A desk review, key informants interviews and focus group discussions were used. Masters of Science degree in Medical Administration training programme commenced in 1995 with the first batch of 31 trainees and only 16 successfully completed the training in 1996. Since then altogether 10 training programmes have been completed up to 2011, and a total of 148 have successfully completed the training and awarded the masters degree in medical administration. Masters programme is a full time course of one year duration and consists of course work and dissertation. The MD programme in Medical Administration for those who successfully completed the MSc in Medical Administration commenced in 2002 and the first Board Certified Consultant was produced in 2007. Since then 18 medical officers have been board certified up-to-date. The MD programme is of two years duration: Part 1, a three month full time course followed by end course evaluation and the successful trainees are enrolled to enter the Part 2, an attachment of one year nine months. Following an end course evaluation they are awarded MD degree in Medical Administration by the PGIM.It is observed that the curriculum does not address the competencies needed by the present day medical managers. Traditional methods of assessments have been used in the training course and the training is being conducted solely by part time instructors who are full time members of other faculties and service providers.The modern health care organizations are complex entities with numerous stakeholders having divergent interests. Managing these complex organizations requires individuals with a variety of skills. The current postgraduate training does not meet the requirements needed to effectively develop the six leadership competency domains: 1. technical skills and knowledge, 2. industry knowledge 3. problem-solving skills, 4. emotional intelligence, 5. communication, and 6. a commitment to lifelong learning.Key words: Leadership, Medical Administration, Sri Lanka" @default.
