- W70660908 abstract "Study of fuel elements after use in the reactor represents an excellent tool for evaluating the reliability of the design and the suitability of the system for continuous longrange operation. For this reason, the fuel elements used in the First Soviet Atomic Power Station for periods of 111, 324, and 557 effective days, corresponding to U/sup 235/ burnup levels of 11.8, 28, and 59%, were examined by inspecting them externally, measuring the diameter, cutting out a sample, carrying out metallographic tests, and determining the mechanical properties. The U/sup 235/ enrichment of the U--Mo alloy of the elements was 5% in the first and third sets and 6% in the second set of elements. The surface temperature was kept at 360 to 370 deg C; the outside surface of the elements was in contact with a gas consisting primarily of N/sub 2/. The largest increase of the diameter was noted near the center, amounting to 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20 mm, respectively, for the 3 sets. The microstructure of the first 2 groups did not show any changes; the elements used for 557 days exhibited microcracks starting at the external surface of the jacket; this is probably due to the embrittlement ofmore » the U-- Mo alloy. The microhardness and the tensile strength of the specimens were found to be increased whlie the 6 was decreased. Increasing burnup appeared to enhance the hardening and the embrittlement. The effects were annealed out by soaking at 650 deg C for 30 minutes. (TTT)« less" @default.
