- W70701092 abstract "Most neurons in the brain change their rate of firing across the sleep–wake cycle. Yet, specific neuronal groups do so in different ways such as to promote different activities and sleep–wake states. Neurons of the cortical activating systems, including glutamatergic neurons in the brainstem reticular formation and nonspecific thalamocortical projection system and cholinergic neurons in the pontomesencephalic tegmentum and basal forebrain, discharge maximally during waking and paradoxical sleep (PS) and minimally during slow-wave sleep (SWS). In contrast, neurons of the behavioral arousal systems, including noradrenergic, histaminergic, and orexinergic neurons, discharge maximally during active waking with high muscle tone and minimally during PS with muscle atonia. Neurons of the activating and arousal systems are inhibited by particular GABAergic neurons that are selectively active during SWS in association with slow-wave activity or that are progressively more active during sleep to reach maximal levels during PS in association with muscle atonia." @default.
