- W70750070 abstract "The evaluation of pressure gradients using Doppler echocardiography and the modified Bernoulli equation to determine the severity of valvular stenoses has been validated in the past and is now generally accepted in clinical use [1–5]. In contrast, the search of a method for reliable quantification of valvular regurgitation is still ongoing. In recent years, a bulk of publications testify the efforts for definition and validation of a satisfactory and convincing method for quantification of mitral regurgitation [6–11]. So far, the semi-quantitative approaches such as mapping of the spatial extent of the regurgitant flow using pulsed Doppler or color Doppler remained unsatisfactory [7,12,13]. A tool for quantitiative assessment of mitral regurgitation would be a comparison of systolic aortic blood volume flow and diastolic left ventricular blood volume inflow. Assessment of volumetric flow by conventional Doppler echocardiography requires the measurement of mean velocity within the cross section of the corresponding vessel and calculation of the cross-sectional area from the two-dimensional image [14,15]. Exact and reproducible determination of these parameters represents the major limitation for quantitative assessment of blood volume flow and thus for quantification of mitral regurgitation by conventional Doppler echocardiography [13–15]." @default.
