- W70974730 abstract "Classic studies performed in the early 1980s sought to determine whether the acute catabolic state that occurs after injury or infection could be explained by the altered hormonal milieu. Healthy subjects received counterregulatory hormones such as adrenaline, Cortisol and glucagon, alone or in combination [1, 2]. It was found that these hormones, acting in synergy, produced transient alterations in glucose, protein and lipid kinetics that resembled those seen after infection and injury, but the responses were less severe and were not sustained. Furthermore, such hormonal infusions did not replicate the fever, neutrophil alterations or elaboration of acute phase proteins that characterize inflammation. The “holy grail” for investigators in this field became the search for the missing factor accounted for the non-hormonal component of the host response and which explained the basis of neuroendocrine activation." @default.
