- W71053635 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses computing experiences of Ryota Suekane in Japan. The first Japanese punched-card machine was designed and constructed by Mr. Kawaguchi in 1905. This machine was an elementary manual one with a low level of performance. In 1938, Mr. Shiokawa of Fuji Electric invented a relay binary circuit and Dr. Ono, professor of mathematics at Tokyo University, conceived the idea of using a binary system in his statistical computer in 1939. This statistical relay computer was actually completed in 1951 with the cooperation of Dr. Yamashita, professor of electrical engineering at Tokyo University. In contrast to Tokyo University's electronic computer based on the EDSAC and using a CRT memory, Dr. M. Goto, Dr. Komiyama, and R. Suekane started a relay computer project based on contact circuit theory, its reliability, and ease of design. The ETL MARK I was completed in 1952 as a pilot model of a bigger machine and the ETL MARK II was completed in 1955. These machines were binary internally and were equipped with decimal-to-binary and binary-to-decimal conversion circuits." @default.
