Bladder neck incision is particularly useful in cases of small prostates. We have modified the method of bladder neck incision to bladder neck resection. A randomized prospective trial was done to compare the results of conventional transurethral resection of the prostate (30 patients) and the new method of bladder neck resection (29). Bladder neck resection was comparable to transurethral resection of the prostate with respect to postoperative hospital stay, maximal flow rates and postoperative complications. Bladder neck resection was better than transurethral resection with respect to the operating time, transfusion requirement, volume of irrigation fluid and postoperative urinary infection. We conclude that bladder neck resection is the operation of choice in patients with a prostate of 30 gm. or less. © 1987 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byYANG Q, PETERS T, DONOVAN J, WILT T and ABRAMS P (2018) TRANSURETHRAL INCISION COMPARED WITH TRANSURETHRAL RESECTION OF THE PROSTATE FOR BLADDER OUTLET OBSTRUCTION: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS OF RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIALSJournal of Urology, VOL. 165, NO. 5, (1526-1532), Online publication date: 1-May-2001.Sirls L, Ganabathi K, Zimmern P, Roskamp D, Wolde-Tsadik G and Leach G (2018) Transurethral Incision of the Prostate: An Objective and Subjective Evaluation of Long-Term EfficacyJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 5 Part 2, (1615-1621), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1993.D’Ancona C, Netto N, Miranda Cará A and Ikari O (2018) Internal Urethrotomy of the Prostatic Urethra or Transurethral Resection in Benign Prostatic HyperplasiaJournal of Urology, VOL. 144, NO. 4, (918-920), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1990.
