- W71250972 abstract "Working hypotheses, sometimes contradictory, are proposed, which distinguish large lakes from small ones in limnological terms. Large lakes tend to be deep and to have long water retention times. Physical forcing and horizontal heterogeneities both in the physical structure and the communities are greater than in small lakes. Biogeochemical cycling is dominated by internal regeneration to a greater extent than by external inputs. Pelagic communities are more important than both littoral and bottom communities in the overall production process. Diminished nutrient loading causes the generally lower productivity of large as compared with shallow and/or small lakes. Massive algal blooms are extremely rare, also due to more intense mixing of the upper water layers. Only large lakes contain truly pelagic fishes. Whereas the seasonality in the pelagic zone frequently is pronounced, it is virtually absent in the deep benthos due to a steady influx of organic matter from the pelagial." @default.
