- W71256514 abstract "Cabbage, Brassica oleracea subsp. capitata L.—one of the most important vegetables in the world—is grown on five continents and in more than 90 countries throughout the world. Cabbage grows best in a moist and cool climate and can withstand considerable frost. In cooler climates, cabbage is grown as either a spring or a fall crop, while in warmer climates, it is largely grown during the winter and early spring. Cabbage is cooked as a green vegetable, eaten raw, and frequently preserved as in sauerkraut or pickle. It is rich in vitamin C and high in minerals and proteins. Cabbage has a somatic chromosome number 2n = 18, and its genome is designated as c. As one of the subspecies of B. oleracea, cabbage is a secondary polyploid with a basic chromosome number of 6. This chapter highlights some cytological investigation done in cabbage. A number of horticultural characters have been studied genetically in cabbage. Brassica oleracea linkages have been reported between male sterility and anthocyanin synthesis and between hairy first leaf and chlorophyll deficiency. The chapter presents a list of the known horticultural characteristics of B. oleracea vegetables. It discusses the breeding objectives for cabbage—breeding for resistance to insects and disease. The chapter also discusses only the most significant diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, and viruses. It also describes various methods used for breeding of cabbage." @default.
