- W71307782 abstract "Egalitarianism is a relatively modern ideal that faces acute obstacles. Market economies enhance production while they lead to massive inequalities of benefits from social organization. Therefore, it seems likely that equality trades off with production. Strict equality of incomes turns national production into one vast problem in which the collective national income is produced by collective action. Individuals have no personal incentive to contribute much to the collective good; personal investment in human capital is not rewarded; and innovators have no incentives to take large risks. Achieving great equality is also likely to require strong government to control distribution, and such government is empowered to do other, often harmful, things. If a single nation strives to achieve far greater equality than other nations, it may have to resort to autarky and harsh controls on migration. For many collective achievements, hierarchy and division of labor seem to be necessary. These typically entail unequal nonmonetary emoluments. Finally, inequality of wealth may actually promote technological progress, because the relatively wealthy will buy new technologies while their prices are far too high for a mass market. The problem of grievous inequality between communities is dynamic; its long-term solution requires enabling people in impoverished communities to engage in productive work to increase their welfare." @default.
