- W71408504 abstract "The main aim of this paper is to try to determine whether there are any cir¬cumstances in which one must unavoidably resort to the production of a saviour sibling (designer baby) given that, from an ethical point of view, the generation of these chil¬dren to resolve the problem of a sick sibling is difficult to accept. The main reason that the production of saviour siblings is discouraged is the low efficiency of the technique, which inevitably entails the loss of a large number of human embryos. If we add the likelihood of medical problems at birth, in addition to as yet unknown long-term risks, the production of these children seems, from an ethical point of view, very questionable. Moreover, since there is a therapeutic alternative with fewer clinical risks and no ethi¬cal issues, such as the use of umbilical cord blood (UCB) from public banks, the produc¬tion of saviour siblings does not appear to be either medically or ethically justified. To assess the need to produce saviour siblings, we carried out a survey among experts in this field, to seek their opinion on the use of UCB, and specifically on the need to produce saviour siblings as a therapeutic instrument to treat a sick child who requires a haematopoietic stem cell transplant." @default.
