- W71954556 abstract "Whether Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Moodle, or open access or proprietary system, an online discussion function is a critical component of any learning management system. Discussion boards or threaded discussions or online discussions allow students and the teacher to interact online, although the formats change slightly or appearances may differ from one software system to another. The discussion board may not seem remarkable to many faculty, since it is used by most faculty who teach online or blended classes. In fact, discussion boards may seem ubiquitous and therefore, uninteresting and unremarkable. But discussion boards need not be ordinary. Perhaps no tool has been used more widely or creatively. In fact, the simple discussion board has fueled a whole range of instructional uses. Widespread uses of discussion boards Certainly, many faculty members use the discussion board function to host student discussions of course material. Students can discuss matters as a whole class or be broken into smaller groups to discuss separate topics. Faculty can use a discussion board for particular purposes: to introduce students to each other, to provide a forum for student questions and answers (which can be provided by students or the faculty person), to host virtual office hours or group advising, or provide a place for students to work together to solve a problem that is class-related (such as deciding who in the group will provide which support for the group's assignment) or not (such as providing a venue for social functions or attempts to find time to meet face-to-face or over the phone). Faculty have developed a number of ways to encourage students to engage in online discussions, by providing points for participation (such as a certain number of points for each post), by requiring a certain number of posts, by detailing the type of posts to be made (such as, one original post plus two posts responding to other student posts), and by assessing the quality of each post (this last is usually accompanied by a rubric that details the qualities sought by the instructor). All of these point structures make it clear that a discussion is not just supposed to happen, but it requires student effort and involvement and it happens for an instructional purpose. Making that instructional purpose clear to students is the responsibility of the instructor in his or her syllabus, but should also be reflected in the assessment tool or technique and the points assessed for the activity. But there are more ways of assessing points, depending on the goals of the course. For example, writing courses may stress the importance of, and assign points or grades based on, the quality of student writing in the discussion boards, including points for grammar, writing style, or sentence structure. Points have been given for the number of research studies or references included in the post to substantiate one's assertions; this is especially critical for students in graduate study or courses that address the rules of research. In another setting, students in the discussion might be charged with developing solutions to a particular problem and their posts assessed as to the quality and comprehensiveness of those solutions. These examples make clear that the purpose of discussions can be varied and need not be limited to sharing personal perspectives or discussing the course material, but can be shaped to achieve a range of other learning objectives. Then an evaluation scheme or points structure can be used to reinforce the learning goals. It is important that the intent of the discussion is made clear to students before engaging in the discussion so that they can understand what they are supposed to do, how to do it, and what they will be evaluated on. Without this structure, discussions can languish or wander and not fulfill their instructional promise. Simple tool, complex uses But there are more uses than these. …" @default.
