- W7225594 abstract "In the memorable late essay on sewage treatment and the history of sanitation, Hyperion to a Satyr (1956), Aldous Huxley gives a brief ac? count of a walk that he and Thomas Mann took down a deserted Southern California beach a few months before the outbreak of the Sec? ond World War. It must have been, to use one of Huxley's favorite ex? pressions, an extraordinary sight: here were two world-famous novelists, one a squat German walrus and the other a tall English carpenter, engrossed in talking of literary cabbages and bellicose dictators while their wives, like obedient oysters, trailed along behind. After some time, urged by their ostreaceous companions to examine their immediate sur? roundings, they were astonished to discover that they were treading upon a carpet of spent condoms, spewed forth from a nearby open sewage pipe and laid down by the ebb and flow of the sea. Quite apart from any hygienic considerations, there is something profoundly symbolic about this scene. On the one hand, there is the eter? nal creative and destructive force of nature; on the other, man's feeble at? tempt to control that force within himself by technological means; and in-between, the ironic, spectatorial intellect. Finally, in the background," @default.
