- W72440419 abstract "This paper presents an analysis and performance of Samarium Cobalt permanent magnet (P.M.) synchronous motors fed from two types of voltage source pulse width modulated (PWM) inverters. The analysis and test results on the steady state performance of a P.M. motor fed from PWM inverters are presented. PWM inverters are used in variable voltage variable frequency applications to avoid a double conversion process of ordinary inverters. In drives, they are used for voltage and speed regulation of motors. Use of modulation technique in inverters also allow to eliminate or minimize selected harmonics from the inverter output voltage. Permanent magnet (P.M.) motors are difficult to start with line frequency supply. However they would start ideally from inverter supply if the inverters are provided with the facility of gradual increase of voltage and frequency to the operating values at the motor terminals during start up period. The steady state performance of P.M. Motors with sine PWM and delta PWM inverter supply have been studied and presented. Both the PWM techniques provide good low order harmonic attenuation. The delta modulated PWM provides voltage to frequency ratio control as well as a transition from PWM mode to square wave mode operation inherently. Where as the voltage to frequency ratio control though present in the sine PWM, it does not have the transition of PWM to squre wave mode of operation. To attain this feature in sine SPWM, it is necessary to incorporate additional control circuitry in the logic circuit. The inverter output voltage equations are presented in the form of Fourier expansion. The harmonic voltage equations are used in conjunction with the motor equations to predict the steady state performance of P.M. motors.
