- W72467691 abstract "In the literature on ImmanuelKant there is no systematic account of the derangement of theconstitutive cognitive faculties from an exclusively philosophicalpoint of view. This dissertation opens the path for the developmentof such an account. It does so by presenting Kant's positiveaccount of the proper functioning of the constitutive cognitivefaculties, namely, sensibility, imagination, and understanding. Assuch, the dissertation offers a series of prolegomena to aKantian theory of the derangement of the cognitive faculties. Atthe foundation of Kant's theory of cognition is the transcendentalunity of apperception, the original ground of cognition. Throughits power of synthesis, the transcendental subject constitutesobjects of experience and discovers itself as pureself-consciousness. The distinction between the pure I oftranscendental apperception and the I as object of inner sense isshown to be crucial to Kant's account of cognition. The difficultbirth of the categories as intelligible forms is analyzed, and aninterpretation is presented of Kant's controversial distinctionbetween judgments of perception and judgments of experience. Wefurther highlight the role played by the synthesis of theimagination in the subjective constitution of the object as apossible determinable object. With this model in place, we turn toKant's account of what can go wrong in human cognition, preparingthe way for a future study of Kant's full-blown theory of cognitivemental derangement." @default.
