- W72531772 abstract "The ability to orient attention to time has been shown to facilitate the reaction times of individuals' responses in choice reaction time tasks. The neural mechanism underlying the increased speed however, remains unknown. The present work aimed to identify the neural basis for this temporal orienting facilitation, through an examination of the brain processes displayed in the final moments prior to movement, as exhibited by the Lateralised Readiness Potential (LRP) in the motor cortex. The LRP consists of two stages; an early cognitive stage, in which situational properties and movement intent are processed, and a late motor phase, in which motor commands are calculated and actuated. Twenty one right-handed participants performed a reaction time (RT) task in which three different types of pre-cues warned of upcoming 'go' cues, with these precues allowing differential levels of movement preparation, and 'go' cues requiring a keyboard button press with either hand. The interval between pre-cue and go cue was either short (1000ms) or long (1750ms). Encephalography was used to record neural activity throughout the task. Participants' LRP's were analysed to determine whether temporal orienting manifested through faster cognitive or motor stage processes. Results indicated that orienting to time conferred advantage through a greater magnitude of early bilateral brain activity and a reduced motor phase of processing in the short interval task, whilst long interval tasks were not affected. This suggests that even early brain activity is associated with motor programming and that attention to time speeds the motor execution phase of movement. These results are discussed in relation to the functions of pre-movement brain activity, and ultimately further our understanding of the processes that give rise to movement." @default.
