- W72609271 abstract "Coral reefs have been a source of construction materials for many centuries, particularly in coralline island nations where there is no other natural building material (Brown, 1997; Moberg and Folke, 1999). The earliest structures to have been built from coral and reef rock were walls and pens associated with fish capture and storage (Hatziolos et al., 1998), but there is also a long tradition of removing materials from coral reefs, nearby lagoons, and sand flats for use as building materials (Brown and Dunne, 1988; Brown et al., 1995; Dulvey et al., 1995; Cesar et al., 1997; Berg et al., 1998). Coral mining for coral heads used as building blocks can markedly alter ecosystem habitat and biodiversity (e.g., Sheppard, 1980; Dulvey et al., 1995). Here we used digital videophotography, computer image analysis, and physical measurements to monitor sedimentation rates, coral cover, genera richness, rugosity, and estimated recruitment dates of massive corals at three different sites, Sampela, Hoga, and Kaledupa, each separated by approx. 1.5 km, in the Wakatobi Marine National Park, S.E. Sulawesi, Indonesia (Elliot et al., 2001; Crabbe and Smith, 2002). Knowledge of coral growth rates is necessary to estimate recruitment dates, and there are numerous studies on coral growth that can be used (e.g., Dodge and Vaisnys, 1975; Hubbard and Scaturo, 1985). To increase the accuracy of such estimates, we developed a model (Crabbe et al., 2002; Crabbe and Smith, 2003) that provides a close fit to both branching and non-branching coral growth data in a number of different locations, and so allows growth prediction with a high level of accuracy. Having accurate estimates of recruitment dates allows us to investigate of the role of anthropogenic and other factors on colony recruitment in recent times." @default.
