- W72687235 abstract "Dr Genny Lane FRSPH, Community Doctor, calls for the need for compassion when it comes to caring for older people All over Europe the elderly population has increased exponentially during the last few years. This is broadly due to an increase in population and better medical treatment. However working against this is the rising cost of care. In the UK the population of over 65 years old was 8,449,372 in 1981; it rose to 10,386,167 in 2011.1 As a percentage of the whole it was 15.00% in 1981 and 16,63% in 2011.1 It is better to think in terms of disability- free life expectancy. These are the older people who are active, able to contribute to society by working or doing voluntary work for others as well as continue to live independently. Do these older people take up the jobs which could be done by young ones? Are they 'job blockers'? Traditionally old age starts at 60 years for women and 65 years for men. The Government now expects employed people to work longer before collecting their pensions. Society's attitude is changing and the younger old people are encouraged to work in the same job as they did in their working lives perhaps doing shorter hours, or are retained to train others, to counsel them in their work or even take up an entirely new line of expertise. In the UK we have a law to forbid age discrimination against the old applying for jobs. New skills and apprenticeships should be flexible to allow older people to make allowance for older people who take longer to acquire new skills. Then there is the whole area of voluntary work, some of which is very constructive and most valuable being in many case equally onorous as the paid positions. The Government depends on this now. At the same time there are downshifting jobs, flexible working, career changes. It has been shown that these things keep people healthier longer. To back these initiatives the Government should play their part. They should offer free eye tests for example, make sure that older people have warm homes and screen for the prevention of the common major disease (strokes, cancers etc). To this I would add podiatry. Eventually people have to retire from active life. That is the time when retirement comes in. This should not be age led but activity-led. When retirement comes about older people should be able to find a place in a nursing home where they can be looked after with care, compassion, dignity and security with what is needed to engender a feeling of wellbeing. Unfortunately in the UK too often nursing homes are closing and the residents made to move out because the value of the land they stand on is much greater if sold to speculators. This makes for a shortage of places and a great deal of hurt and distress for many people. This is avoidable with the relevant guidance to planners. Ensuring dignity in the care of older people should underpin all the work done by anyone, in whatever capacity working with older people. In the UK the Patients Association in November 2011 published their annual report entitled 'We've been listening; Have you been learning'. …" @default.
