- W72828287 abstract "The aim of this research was to examine the similarities and differences between pilgrims and religious touristsr travel motivations and satisfactions after visiting a pilgrimage site in Taiwan. The focus of this study is on the Eastern tradition of pilgrimage at a prominent religious site in Taiwan named lNan Kun Shen Dai Tian Templer (hereafter referred to as NKS Temple). Despite the emergence of religious tourism as a prominent tourism market in Taiwan, theoretical gaps have been identified in the travel motivations and tourist satisfaction literature relating to Taiwanese pilgrimage destinations and no previous studies were identified to have applied the push and pull model in this context. Additionally, there exist limited studies in religious tourism regarding the similarities and differences between pilgrims and tourists. A quantitative methodology was used because this study replicated two past studiesr (Y.-C. Chang, 2010; Tang, 2006) survey instruments. A purposive sampling method was used and data collection for the self-completed survey questionnaire occurred in January, 2013 at the NKS Temple. A total of 389 usable questionnaires were collected with a response rate of 97.25%. To examine the respondentsr self-perceptions and identify pilgrims and religious touristsr socio-demographic and trip characteristics, descriptive analysis was conducted. The results found that as the first hypothesis had proposed, there was a significant difference in the number of respondents identifying themselves as religious tourist compared to pilgrims. To identify the underlying factors within the 14 push and 10 pull travel motivation factors, exploratory factor analysis was used and had found two push (Social and Cultural Exploration and Spiritual and Psychological Well-Being) and two pull (Culture and Heritage and Destination Facilities) motivation factors. Taiwanese visitors had the highest travel motivation scores for their opportunities to understand and learn about the NKS Templers history and culture, to share the novel experience with others and to seek answers and personal fulfillment. They were mainly attracted by the NKS Templers fame, convenient parking and design of its architecture. The similarities and differences between pilgrims and religious touristsr push and pull motivations, pre-trip expectations and satisfactions were tested using the independent samples t-test and Mann-Whitney U test (sensitivity analysis). The results supported the hypothesis that pilgrims and tourists was significantly different in their push motivation factors but partially supported the hypothesis that they differed significantly in the pull motivation factors since a significant difference was not found in the Destination Facilities pull factor. In addition, the results showed that the Taiwanese people had high pre-trip expectations in the NKS Templers conservation and maintenance of historic monuments, parking convenience and display of cultural artifacts. These attributes were also highly satisfied. The hypothesis that the pilgrims and religious tourists had a significant difference in their pre-trip expectations and satisfactions of the NKS Templers attributes was only partially supported since although they had no significant differences in their pre-trip expectations, they differed significantly in their level of satisfaction with these attributes. Furthermore, importance-performance analysis was used to analyse the similarities and differences between pilgrims and religious touristsr destination attribute satisfaction levels which graphically showed that the two groups had no difference since all attributes were plotted in the same quadrant. This studyrs research on pilgrimage within a Taiwanese context has contributed to the body of research in religious tourism studies and may prompt further research in this area given the growth potential in religious tourism at a global scale.n" @default.
