- W73102638 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses ethnicity as a barrier to migration in Yugoslavia. Empirical investigation of migration in Yugoslavia reveals the strong influence of an ethnic factor upon the migration decision. A strong positive attraction for a potential migrant is the existence in a destination of a large group of the same ethnicity as the migrant's. In Yugoslavia as a whole, it was found that this effect seemed most important for the smallest groups—Slovenes, Montenegrins, Macedonians—and least important for the largest group, the Serbs. But even for the Serbs, some evidence was found of putting more weight on ethnic considerations the smaller the relative size of their group in a region. Though the evidence clearly suggests that migration patterns do not follow development in a conventional way, the feedback effect upon growth itself has not been measured—this would require a counterfactual exercise of some considerable ingenuity. There is a possible link to development that may be of considerable future interest: Increasing economic development may break down many of the traditional ties, including the ethnic one, so that the importance given to ethnic affinity might decline with time and economic growth." @default.
