- W73169975 abstract "Abstract Previous work has shown that when ethylene adsorbs on Pt(lll) ethylidyne forms even though vinylidene is thermodynamically favored. The purpose of this paper was to see if conservation of orbital symmetry could provide some insight into why ethylidyne rather than vinylidene forms on Pt(lll). It is found that vinylidene formation from ethylene is symmetry forbidden on Pt(lll) while ethylidyne formation is allowed. However, vinylidene formation is allowed on (lxl)Pt(lOO). Experimental results show that vinylidene rather than ethylidyne actually forms on (lxl)Pt(lOO). Thus, it appears that ethylene decomposition on Pt(lll) does not follow the thermodynamically preferred pathway because of orbital symmetry constraints." @default.
