- W73193463 abstract "Publisher Summary In the prematurely borne species like rats and mice, the first postnatal week is considered as one of the critical periods regarding the sensitivity of developing brain to hormone exposure. The hormones of pituitary-adrenal system are known to play a crucial role in the regulation of adaptive behavioral functions as arousal, motivation, learning and memory, or emotionality in adult mammals. Implantation of corticosterone in mice impairs behavioral adaptability observed during operant conditioning. Corticosterone given to newborn mice increases submissiveness in adulthood. This suggests that the development of social behavior may also be influenced by adrenocortical hormones. There is also evidence that adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) given in the early postnatal age influences adult adaptive behavior. This chapter compares the behavioral effect of neonatally given corticosterone to those of ACTH peptides, and outlines the probable physiological importance of pituitary-adrenal system hormones in the development of adaptive behavior." @default.
