- W73376277 abstract "Data on the development of leukemia following single whole-body irradiation in Hiroshima, and after repeated segmental irradiations for arthritis in humans are reported. In single whole-body irradiation in a dose of 500 r, leukemia occurred in 0.3% of the cases. In segmental repeated irradiation for a period of several years effected in the same dose for arthritis leukemia was recorded in 0.25% of patients treated. The incidence of occupational leukemia in roentgenologists is similar to the abovementioned figures. Gamma and x rays, as well as neutrons, may be the cause of leukemia. However, in respect to beta radiation no pathogenetic relation with leukemia was established, In experiments staged on mice, three types of leukemia induced by radiation are observed. More often there are seen lymphadenosis with involvement of the thymus (up to 75%), lymphadenosis without affection of the thymus (up to 25%), and rarely myelosis. The development of any one of the forms of leukemia in mice depends upon the mode of irradiation. Mice irradiated before birth did not develop leukemia. Upon irradiation of newborn animals, more frequently retroperitoneal lymphadenosis and rarely myelosis occur; upon irradiation of aduIt animals, myelosis develops more frequently. No fiItrable factor in radioinduced myeloses couldmore » be found. (auth)« less" @default.
