- W7426352 abstract "The response of the rat small intestine to an overnight fast has been compared with feeding ad libitum with chow. Free access to water was allowed. No difference was noted between the groups of animals in body weight, small intestinal length, circumference, tissue thickness, water, or lipid content. However, the intestine of the fed rats was heavier and the deoxyribonucleic acid content greater than in the fasted group and these increases appeared to be due to the greater cell mass of the mucosal fraction. Other studies showed microsomal palmitoyl thiokinase specific activity and amino acid and hexose transport to be greater in the fed versus the fasted intestine. Using 3H-thymidine, the specific activity of intestinal and mucosal deoxyribonucleic acid was also significantly greater in the fed group. The difference in cell proliferative activity and cell content between the two groups is believed to be related to the stimulatory effect of food compared with the relative inhibitory effect of even a short period of starvation on cell proliferation in the epithelial crypts of the small intestine. These observations on the structure and function of the small intestine in the fasted and fed animals appear to be important considerations in studies of absorption." @default.
