- W74347146 abstract "Yates died Birmingham, Alabama on 7 November 1992 from emphysema and the complications of surgery. His legacy includes seven novels,(1) two collections of short stories,(2) collection he edited, entitled Stories for the Sixties (1963), and William Styroh's Lie Down Darkness: A Screenplay (1985). Although his books were regularly reviewed favorably, they never sold more than ten-thousand copies hardcover or did very well mass market sales paperback; nor did Yates ever produce bestseller (Lawrence 16). Over the years, scholars have paid lamentably little attention his work,(3) fact that has doubtless contributed his not having wide readership. As Andre Dubus notes, Richard Yates is one of our great writers with too few . (160). Yates apparently hoped for more of an audience, for he told Dubus, don't want money. I just want readers (161). What follows is an attempt do some further measure of justice this craftsman who regarded Flaubert as his god (Lawrence 17), by focusing on one of his extraordinary short stories from Eleven Kinds of Loneliness. Doctor Jack-o'-lantern, 40 years old this year. Another Yeats (William Butler) said letter Dorothy Wellesley, dated 8 September [1935], that a poem comes right with click like closing box (24). same might be said of Yates's prose, which masterfully chronicles the lives of his characters, capturing the essence of their personalities by wedding incident language (Klinkowitz 15). In speaking of Yates's style, Robert Phillips observes that in time of hysterical experimentation the novel, his is triumph of lucidity - utterly lacking stylistic gymnastics or self-conscious mannerism (550). His stories satisfy because they are subtly polished and because they disclose concerned, scrupulously honest, unpretentious intelligence at work. Clearly, Yates has reflected deeply about the characters he chooses place everyday situations, pondering their predicaments and ferreting out the nuances of gesture and thought - finally presenting it all with elegant simplicity. That is how he makes memorable characters like Vincent Sabella and Miss Price Doctor Jack-o'-lantern. One cannot help but get caught up their attempts cope with their troubles, to put the world order.(4) Miss Price's efforts are those of dedicated teacher, while Vincent's are those of problem child. Each tries transcend frustrating reality - she by doing what she can for Vincent; he by lying, acting tough, and drawing graffiti. In the end, however, they (and many other characters the Yates canon) remain immured their ways of seeing the world, which have finality them that is neither bang nor whimper; it is just click. story seems as much Miss Price's as Vincent's, but Yates's titles strongly suggest that our major concern must be Vincent. original title was The Ordeal of Vincent Sabella,(5) while the final title immortalizes the protagonist, whom we are remember as Doctor Jack-o'-lantern, with the cutting edge of irony. unfortunate boy, who has unwittingly brought on his own downfall, has been derisively referred that way by two boys who brand him indelibly as one rejected by his peers.(6) Since Eleven Kinds of Loneliness is currently out of print, I shall provide brief summary of what transpires the story. It revolves around Vincent Sabella, an orphan living with foster parents, who one day appears Miss Price's fourth-grade classroom. He is undeniably tough who does not belong the class. After introducing him his classmates, Miss Price proceeds with her Monday morning reports - opportunities for her pupils narrate front of the class what they did over the weekend and thereby gain some poise and self-assurance.
