- W744887487 abstract "Non-embedded traffic sensors are becoming more prevalent in freeway management, signal control, and traffic monitoring applications. While embedded loops have been traditionally used in these applications, they pose operational and maintenance issues. Non-embedded sensors are placed outside the road surface, do not require road closures during installation, utilize existing support structures, and have less complicated wiring. Their disadvantages include possible inaccuracies resulting from occlusion, power sources, and limitations and constraints on communications. Non-embedded sensors can be either active or passive. Active sensors, which send out a signal and receive a response, include radar-based sensors, active infrared sensors, ultra-sonic, and scanning lasers. Passive sensors detect without sending a signal, and these include cameras, acoustic sensors, and passive infrared sensors. The article also relates an experience in Virginia of deploying non-embedded traffic monitors and self monitoring cabinets in a real-time traffic and traveler information system application." @default.
