- W744980617 abstract "Hyperfine interaction studies have made, and continue to make, substantial contributions towards our understanding of nuclear structure. Following the overview, an elementary section is devoted to a discussion of the various quantities that describe the distributions of charge and magnetism in nuclei. As the sources of nuclear hyperfine fields we consider electronic and mesic atoms, and solid crystal lattices. Several topics which have had a significant impact on nuclear structure physics, and which appear promising for the near future, have then been selected for a more detailed description. A section on laser spectroscopy is linked to a discussion of the electromagnetic moments of unusual nuclear states, i.e. nuclei far off the stability line and superdeformed states in actinide nuclei. Recently, much has been learned about the structure and deformation of high-spin states. First experimental evidence for the unusually large oblate deformation of a high-spin state 147 in Gd has been obtained. The unexpectedly large transient magnetic fields for fast nuclear recoils in polarized ferromagnetics may be utilized to determine g factors of short-lived, deformed high-spin states.
