W745532466 abstract "The piyyut, The Groom's Qedushta, was composed not for Passover but for the Sabbath following a marriage, making it a kind of early Jewish epithalamium or wedding hymn. The qedushta, which was composed for recitation on the Sabbath after a marriage rather than during Passover, does not embellish the entire Song of Songs. The piyyut finds a place in this anthology, however, because the setting for which this poem was composed, the celebration of a wedding, frustrates the tendency to separate symbolic and literal readings of the Song. As such, it models an important alternative interpretation of the Song in a liturgical-poetic context. The poem as a whole, however, segues seamlessly and repeatedly between varied allegorical and non-allegorical modes of address, often using the language of the Song as its raw material.
