- W74659009 abstract "The evolution of challenge specific long term immunity in the Mollusca and other invertebrates is intriguing in that it implies a level of cellular differentiation and immune complexity previously reported only in vertebrates. Correlative confocal laser scanning and scanning electron microscopy were employed to study receptor mediated endocytosis. We report a class of dendritic-like cells found in the hemolymph of the oyster which appear to function like antigen presenting cells. These cells proteolytically cleave fluorescently labeled but self-quenched ovalbumin into fluorescencent peptides, via Fc receptor mediated endocytosis. Oyster dendritic-like cells comprise 4% of the circulating hemocytes and are distinguished from other cells by the presence of β-adrenergic receptors on their plasma membranes.
