- W74659935 abstract "From 4th symposium on microdosimetry; Pallanza, Italy (24 Sep The response of a 1-hit detector to an arbitrary radiation field is calculable from 2 numbers, a characteristic dose E/sub o/ and a characteristic dimension a/sub o/. Assigmnent of these numbers to the Fricke dosimeter from its response to heavy ions and gammarays has made it possible to predict its response to neutrons. Of the two parameters, the dose E/sub o/ is dominant in importance, reflecting changes in the detector sensitivity over many orders of magnitude, while a/sub o/ is responsible for sensitivity changes of about factor 2 or less, principally for lighter ions. Typically, the radiosensitivity of 1-hit detectors declines with an increase in LET, is non-linear and multiple valued when plotted as a function of either LET or z/sup 2// BETA /sup 2/. The response is linear with dose at low dose, saturating at doses approaching and exceeding E/sub o/, when irradiated with x-rays. The constellation of 1-hit detectors now includes (at least as candidates) emulsion, scintillators, thermo- and photoluminescent dosimeters, TSEE, the Fricke dosimeter, radical production, enzyme and virus inactivation, darkening of dyecyanide films, and optical rotation. Differences in the radiosensitivity to heavy ions of different LET asmore » a function of E/sub o/ and a/ sub o/ suggest that useful measures of radiation quality can be formed from single or paired 1-hit detectors. Since the response of these detectors and of mammalian cells is calculable from radiosensitivity parameters and of the particle-energy spectrum of a radiation field, it is of interest to examine the possibility that these detectors can be used to achieve an estimate of the equivalent dose in a complex environment. Since the fraction of the dose delivered in the gamma-kill mode, to a cellular population, also declines with LET, an attempt was made to match the RBE of selected 1-hit detectors to the gamma-kill dose fraction, for neutrons, and dispersed beams of charged particles.
