- W747197940 abstract "Reshaping Ecumenical Theology: The Church Made Whole? By Paul Avis. (London and New York: T & T Clark International: A Continuum Imprint, 2010, Pp. 209. AUD $39.99.)Paul Avis is without question most widely published ecumenical theologian in Church of England. Therefore one can welcome with considerable enthusiasm this collection of essays most of which he has previously published in various places, and most of which he has selected and re-worked and freshly edited, and in some cases expanded or even corrected, for publicauon in this single volume. One must add, and this is certainly a reason for offering a review of this book in ajournai dedicated to Anglican and Episcopal history, that he always writes with an eye towards historical facts that underlie every ecumenical topic, and does not simply present his theological opinions as patently obvious no matter what political stance colors his theology. The ecumenical topics treated in this book range quite widely, and it may be well first simply to survey them by name at outset. They include: ecclesiology, episcopacy, confessionalism, phenomenon of a confessing koinonia, women's ordination, differentiated consensus, provisionality, creedal attributes of church, theology of communion, ecumenism and ethics, and transitivity. On whole, and in spite of this rich diversity of subject matter, one does leave book with impression that its author has had greater and deeper experience in relations with protestant churches, broadly speaking, than with larger churches of Roman and Orthodox folds.Overall, on very positive side, Avis makes some important observations. One is his emphasis that all Christians, in churches as well as individually, must have always an obligation, not just a desire but an obligation, to seek and remain in communion with their fellow Christians (142, 153, 156, 162). Avis presses this as ecumenical goal, even though there are times in book when reader can detect a certain measure of discouragement at lack of ecumenical progress he sees on certain fronts (vii, 21, 68, 186). Another cardinal point of book is author's emphasis that first task of all ecumenical dialogue must be to seek a deeper understanding of the other, to meet other and to talk through issues (60, 61, 96). There is also a very valuable section on Lutherans, a tradition in which Avis is especially well versed, which should be quite useful to all Anglicans in their relations with Christians of that tradition (117-22). …" @default.
