- W74766977 abstract "This article employs the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 from 1997-2008, a 12-year panel to study smoking transitions among discrete categories defined in both intensity and frequency of smoking. We use the competing risk model to estimate effects of cigarette prices and smoke-free law in bars on these transitions. The results suggest that higher cigarette prices significantly promote regressive transitions and deter some progressive transitions in both intensity and frequency. Heavy smokers who smoke daily or more than 15 cigarettes a day are more price-responsive in quitting cold-turkey than the rest of smokers. In addition, smoke-free law in bars significantly decreases the probabilities of relapse and transition from light to heavy smoking. However, the prevention effects of policies tend to diminish with more intense smoking. Our findings present the complete picture of smoking dynamics among youth and young adult, add to the evidences on how a price increase leads to decreases in cigarette consumption and smoking participation by identifying its mediating effects on the intense and frequent levels of smoking and illustrate how policy responsiveness differ by these levels. The results underscore the effectiveness and importance of policy interventions in this critical stage." @default.
