- W749224445 abstract "There are countless international activities celebrating the [200.sup.th] birthdays of Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner in 2013. In musicological research and the music industry, in the specialist literature, on the calendars of opera houses, in concert halls, and at popular outdoor events, these two musical giants of the nineteenth century are being expressly brought out as a central theme for various purposes, with old as well as new results. For our part, we can offer new findings here about the reception of Verdi and Wagner in Tyrol. These are based on our systematic inventorying of historically valuable musical sources with RISM Tyrol-South & OFM (Franciscan Province) Austria. We constantly work from the point of view of cataloging and documenting unknown materials related to the music history of the region that we oversee. The scholarly evaluation of the cataloged sources can then follow as a next step. I will present here relevant Tyrolean sources related to Verdi and Wagner reception in that have been cataloged for RISM in the past few years: music manuscripts, printed music, and, lastly, some concert programs as well. They range in date from the 1840s to the 1930s. They are of importance to research and scholarship because they are good examples of allowing partial but, at the same time, detailed insight into the significance that was accorded to the oeuvres of Verdi and Wagner within the multifaceted musical life in Tyrol. One fact in particular suggests that in Tyrol, the Land im Gebirge (Land in the Mountains), at least Wagner was regarded as a legend among music lovers. In February 1883, a funeral train from Venice to Bayreuth with Wagner's body on board made stops in Bozen as well as in Innsbruck. At these stops, leading representatives of public musical life showed their reverence to the deceased as the grossem deutschen Tonheros (great German hero of sound). (2) But how was it with Verdi in Tyrol? In the remarks that follow, I will use examples to outline some essential features of Verdi and Wagner reception in Tyrol. Next, I will attempt to examine the sources within the context of the presence of Verdi's and Wagner's works in in general, insofar that this can be accomplished given the moderate state of current research on the one hand and the limited framework here on the other. Finally, I will sketch a perspective of which topics are relevant to Verdi and Wagner reception in twentieth-century Tyrol. Verdi Sources in Tyrolean Archives Verdi's operas dominated European stages in the nineteenth century. Contributing to their success were the gushing richness of melodies, the sensitive depiction of the characters, and the moving realization of human feelings. It is therefore not surprising when portions from operas that were being performed at the time gripped the public with their drama and sonorous emotion, and were played and heard outside of opera houses. For a long time, military musical ensembles went beyond their official duties and occupied an active place in civilian concert life. With their outstanding and professionally-trained musicians, they were virtually predestined to perform pieces that were demanding musically as well as technically. They played in front of opera aficionados in the concert hall as well as outdoors, in which case the performing forces were large and the sound voluminous. Often the military music directors themselves undertook necessary adaptations to make the pieces suitable for wind ensemble. They also saw to it that these arrangements were disseminated and they became a model for civilian musicians, even in small rural towns. It is always surprising how quickly a piece went from its premiere at the opera house to its general proliferation among the people. This was also true for Tyrol. Here Tyrol indicates a geographic entity in its form until 1918, which included the areas of present-day North, East, and South as well as Trentino. …" @default.
