- W75143017 abstract "This chapter narrates a study, which states that over 4.5 years of utilizing both electrophysiological studies and muscle biopsy, it was found that there was a high incidence of myopathy (42%), possibly because of the high incidence of post-transplant patients in their ICU, steroids presumably contributing to the myopathy. Certain categories of patients who have been admitted to the CCU for severe, primary illnesses, or trauma and later develop neuromuscular disease, were under observation. Anoxic myelopathy affects mainly anterior horn cells and may result from cardiac arrest, aortic atherosclerosis, surgery of the aorta, or severe pulmonary disease. The phrenic nerve is stimulated percutaneously in the supraclavicular fossa with single electrical stimuli to obtain a pure phrenic nerve response seen as a characteristic waveform. Surface recording electrodes are applied 5 cm superior to the tip of the xiphoid process (G1) and to the costal margin 16 cm from the G1 electrode as the G2 electrode ipsilaterally. The electrodiagnostic examination frequently allows differentiation of these disorders, but in many patients, sensory nerve conduction studies and the assessment of motor unit potential morphology and recruitment are often hampered by technical factors and inadequate patient cooperation." @default.
