- W75153885 abstract "Peace is not news. In fact, the systems that provide news do not seem to recognize peace as newsworthy. It becomes news against the background of war. So unnewsworthy is peace that to have worth, wars have to be waged nowadays by third parties (variously called international peace-keeping forces) to bring warring partners to the peace table. Somalia is a clear example of how a peacekeeping mission became a peace enforcement mission that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Somalis. Paradoxically, people had to be killed in great numbers to enforce peace. The Somalis that lost their lives by the deadly weapons of an intervening international force died brutally. The purpose of this article is to examine the role of peace communication in conflict resolution processes in Africa. The article will focus on a position grounded in some of the basic communication assumptions and principles that are supposed to guide human behavior. The basic position referred to above is that the context within which peace communication could be effective in Africa is marred by extraneous factors that are compounded by the absence of a concerted effort at creating the cadre of peace communication experts required to work in unison with colleagues in the political and social spheres. Peace communication is defined as a communication process aimed at achieving peace with a distinct suasory characteristic feature, operating within a context composed of cultural warrants that form the bases for justification of actions." @default.
