- W75244815 abstract "Are there good grounds for believing in the existence of Freudian phenomena? Has it been shown that men may come to grief through their infantile sexual infatuation with their mothers, or that symptoms may result from the repression of sexual ideation, or repression of any kind of ideation. Has any dream been shown to be the result of the nocturnal activities postulated by Freud? These claims, as I have stated them, cannot be overthrown by the production of counter-instances because they are noncommittal with respect to generality. However the claims are so startling and so pregnant with momentous implications that it would be churlish to object to a lack of generality if there was reason to believe there were any authentic instances at all. For almost a century, the belief that there are authentic instances has been based predominantly on Freud's claims that there were. But not everyone has found these persuasive. Must we wait on advances in scientific psychopathology to resolve this issue? It is obvious that the outcome of future epidemiological or experimental studies could not compel us to conclude that Freud was mistaken. The phenomena he reported may have been authentic but may have since ceased to exist. The questions we need to address are whether Freud provided good evidence that they did exist and, if not, why has it been so widely accepted that he had. Adolf Gruinbaum has an unhelpful comment on the first of these: Despite the poverty of the clinical support it could conceivably turn out that Freud's brilliant theoretical imagination was actually serendipitously right in some respects (Griinbaum, 1986, p. 228). What this remark tells us-besides the fact that" @default.
