- W75291879 abstract "Oncogenic viruses differ from one another in nucleic acid content, morphology, mode of replication, host range, ability to cause neoplasia in their natural host, and type of antigens induced in tumor or transformed cells. Invariably, tumors induced by oncogenic viruses are antigenic and induce an immune response in the autochthonous or syngeneic host. The immune response to virus-induced antigens in transformed cells has been used to alter the progression of the neoplastic disease and is directed against cell surface antigens that are responsible for inducing cellular and humoral immune responses. The mechanism of the rejection of virus-induced tumors has been demonstrated to be because of the thymus-dependent cellular immune response; however, humoral immunity may also play a role in the tumor host interaction. There is accumulating evidence that uncommitted lymphoid cells, other than T cells, and macrophages may participate in the killing of weakly antigenic syngeneic tumor cells. This chapter discusses the role of macrophages in the rejection of virus-induced tumors. It also discusses the tumors induced by a DNA virus and SV40 and presents comparisons with the process involved in the rejection of RNA virus-induced tumors." @default.
