- W753625624 abstract "The development and use of a'n experimental test rigis reported which is capable of modelling two- andthree-dimensional wall-bounded air jets. This test rigwas primarily produced in order to facilitate theexperimental verification of computer codes forcalculating convective heat transfer within mechanically-ventilated enclosures. Special attention was thereforegiven in the design of the rig to heat transfermeasurements within such enclosures.The analogy between heat and mass transfer and theapplication of the naphthalene sublimation technique areexplained. Also use of phase change paints in heattransfer measurements in general, and wall-jets inparticular, is discussed and experimentally demonstrated.The boundary conditions for the application of each of theabove two methods are then specified. The mass transfermethod may be used for the case of a heated plate and ajet at ambient temperature while the phase change paintmethod is applicable to a heated jet.Heat/mass transfer studies are carried out for twodifferent geometries. First beneath a plane wall-jet-obstructed by a normal flat-plate (Alamdari, Hammond andMontazerin (1986 bound paper)), where the data arecompared with the computations of the 'intermediate-level'convection model of Alamdari and Hammond (1982) and thehigh-level 'elliptic' finite domain flow model of Pun andSpalding (1977). The comparison has been a cleardemonstration of the capabilities of the computer codesand has shown that although their results over flatsurfaces are in good agreement with the test data, theirpredictions for jets flowing round corners need furtherresearch. Secondly the flow and heat transfercharacteristics of a three-dimensional jet parallel to aflat plate has been studied. In this case the flow fieldand mass transfer are modelled and an equation is finallyderived which estimates the average heat transfer over aplate parallel to a bluff-jet for a variety of off-setheights, Reynolds numbers and nozzle aspect ratios and canreadily be used by design engineers handling such flows." @default.
