- W755173229 abstract "The commercial product PGRIV was tested in small plots on cotton at the Maricopa Agricultural Center. Multiple foliar applications of PGRIV had no significant effect on lint yield or fiber properties of DP5415 or Pima S -7 cotton. Introduction The product PGRIV is a solution of various biologically active compounds including the plant growth regulators gibberellic acid and indolebutyric acid. PGRIV has been reported to increase cotton yields by increasing the number of bolls retained by plants (Urwiler and Stutte, 1988). Materials and Methods Pima S -7 and DP5415 seed was planted in moist soil on 9 April, 1993. Irrigations were on 3 May, 7 June, 19 June, 2 July, 30 July and 16 August. The plantings received 100 lbs. of N /acre total for the season. The plantings were divided into plots 43 ft. long by 4,40 inch rows wide. Plots were separated by 7 ft. alleys. Both the Pima and Upland tests were arranged in randomized complete block designs replicated 7 times. A description of the treatments is shown in Tables 1 and 2. The treatments were applied by a tractor mounted sprayer boom that sprayed 4 rows at a time. When foliar treatments were applied in a band, nozzles were spaced 40 inches apart and when treatments were applied broadcast, nozzles were spaced 20 inches apart. The application rate for band applications was 8 GPA for cotton in the seedling stage and 15 GPA for cotton at the pin head square stage. Broadcast applications at early bloom and mid bloom were at a rate of 20 GPA. Petiole NO3 -N content ranged from 4000 -5000 ppm for Pima and Upland cotton on 15 Aug. To measure the effect of treatments on earliness, cumulative seed cotton data were collected from all plots in both Upland and Pima tests. Open cotton was picked in 50 sq.ft. subplots in each treatment plot. For the Pima test cotton was picked on 24 Aug., 7 Sept., 14 Sept., 21 Sept., 29 Sept., 8 Oct. and 28 Oct. For the Upland test cotton was picked on 15 Aug., 23 Aug., 7 Sept., 14 Sept., 21 Sept., 28 Sept., 8 Oct. and 1 Nov. On 20 Oct., a 25 boll sample was collected from each plot to determine boll weight, lint percent and seed index. The tests were defoliated on 15 Oct. Defoliants used were Dropp at 0.15 lb. a.i. /acre and Def at 0.75 lb. a.i. /acre. There were no visual differences among PGRIV treatments in the effectiveness of the defoliation treatment. The center two rows of each plot were machine harvested on 4 Nov. Grab samples (4 lb. seedcotton) were taken from the harvested seedcotton from each treatment in two replicates of each test to estimate gin turnout. Gin turnout averaged 36% for the Upland test and 33% for the Pima test. Lint samples from each treatment in four replicates were sent to Starlab, Inc., Knoxville, TN for HVI analysis . Heat units for the growing season (9 April -15 Oct.) were 4406 (86/55 °F thresholds)." @default.
