- W75603531 abstract "Putting the issue in quite as simple a manner might possibly give the impression that the way instructional technology (IT) relates to Islamic education is unique and distinct from the way it relates to or affects education in general. This is not the intention of this essay; in fact it is just the opposite. There is much in contemporary educational thinking that is of relevance to Islamic education. There are questions asked and concerns raised by educationists whose purview is not Islamic education that those interested in Islamic education would do well to pay heed to. The educationists who in their concerns exhibit great affinity with the problems that should interest Muslim educationists are generally called critical pedagogues and their practice, critical pedagogy. The problematic of critical pedagogy is defined by its commitment to social justice and, since social justice is not a state of affairs that can be bestowed upon people by some external agency, the pedagogical and educational aim of critical pedagogy is to empower people to act in and on the world for the realization of social justice. An essential element of pedagogy designed to empower students to act is teaching them to look at the world critically by asking such questions as: why are things the way they are and could they be different? The assumption underlying this problematic is that human reality is socially constructed, which means that it bears the impress of their thoughts and actions, and therefore, whatever form this reality takes should be accountable to human needs, i.e., democratically justifiable. Critical pedagogues, therefore, alert us to the historical tendency of those in power to colonize social reality to make it more responsive to their needs at the cost of the needs of others. Such a problematic of necessity has to be couched in ethical terms." @default.
