- W75604872 abstract "Polymer yields produced from o-terphenyl by irradiation with alpha particles of 1--1.5 Mev energy from a Po/sup 210/ source were detemnined over the temperature range of 80 to 300 deg C. The plot of log G(-M) (the number of terphenyl molecules represented by a given weight of polymer) versus 1/T deg K gave a linear function; from the slope a low apparent activation energy of 1.3 kcal/mole can be derived for polymer formation. G(-M) values varied from 0.41 at 60 deg to 0.90 at 300 deg C. The results were in agreement with recent observations of linear energy transfer (LET) effects in the formation of certain C/sub 12 /products from benzene. The value of G(-M) for fast-neutron irradiation of o-terphenyl, calculated by assuming that the plot of polymer yield versus log LET is linear, was 0.7, in good agreement with the previous values estimated for isomeric terphenyls. The small magnitude of the LET effect compared with the LET effects in aqueous systems reflected the minor importance of track effects in the liquid o-terphenyl system, and the very small value for the activation energy suggested that the initiating radical was an energetic radical and not a thermal radical.
