- W75666500 abstract "Since the identification by Furchgott and Zawadzki (1980) of the role of the endothelium as a modulator of vascular smooth muscle, attention has focused on the characterization of endothelium-dependent responses and on the identification of the substance(s) that mediates such responses in mammalian blood vessels. It soon became obvious that the amplitude and direction of endothelium-dependent responses to a given agonist varied among vessels derived from different vascular beds (De Mey and Vanhoutte, 1982). For example, acetylcholine initiates endothelium-dependent relaxations in systemic arteries of the dog, whereas in the comparable veins such relaxations were absent or blunted. Since the endothelia of veins and arteries are chronically exposed to quite different physical and chemical conditions, one explanation for the variations in responsiveness among them is that exposure to a given environment modulates the function of the endothelial cells and therefore affects the expression of endothelium-dependent responses." @default.
