- W756715445 abstract "Tantillo, Astrida Orle. The Will to Create: Goethe's Philosophy of Nature. Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2002. 256 pp. $32.50 hardcover. Rowland, Herbert, ed. Goethe, Chaos, and Complexity. Amsterdam: Rodopi, 2001. 201pp. $41.00 paperback. See reviews in previous section. Anderson, Paul Irving. Ehrgeiz und Trauer. Fontanes offiziose Agitation 1859 und ihre Wiederkehr in Unwiederbringlich Stuttgart: Franz Steiner, 2002. 239 pp. euro59.00 hardcover. Paul Irving Anderson's new book on Fontane reads much like a mystery novel. An American Germanist discovers a lost book by Fontane, leading him to reconstruct the labyrinthine narrative surrounding this book's origin, complete with political intrigue and scandal. Even as Anderson himself strikes this sensationalist tone-which, true to his subject-matter, he never entirely abandons-he is, of course, quick to concede that the unknown work in question is in fact a virtual book. More precisely, what Anderson has uncovered is a series of 79 newspaper articles that Fontane penned in the capacity of Offiziosus between July and September of 1859. In Ehrgeiz und Trauer Anderson uses this abundance of newly (re)discovered material to radically reconsider Fontane's role as political journalist. The central of the book's three parts comprises the texts themselves: all 79 articles are fully reproduced (minus redundancies), complete with explanatory footnotes, a key to the various sigla, an exhaustive glossary of proper names, and an appendix of supplementary articles. This section of the book is its most substantial (in terms of length), and one might even read its surrounding sections as extensions of the critical apparatus to this primary source material, which is, after all, not available anywhere else, including in collections of Fontane's journalistic writings. On the basis of this material alone, Ehrgeiz und Trauer is indispensable. Equally so is Anderson's meticulously researched and thoroughly reconstructed narrative of the elaborate circumstances surrounding Fontane's journalistic service in and around 1859 that serves as the book's first part. Anderson details the development of the official press (Regierungspresse) and Fontane's place in it, from the establishment of the Centralstelle fur Presangelegenheiten through its rigidification in the birth of the Neue Ara and beyond. Anderson resists any monolithic depiction of the function of the Offiziosus as simply a tool of the state. Such a writer was not a propagandist, but rather-somewhat like the fool at court-was supposed to speak his mind, agitate the masses, and even criticize the state. …" @default.
