- W756753503 abstract "Colomb, Jacob. Nietzsche and Zion. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2004. 274 pp. $39.95 hardcover. Jacob Colomb of Hebrew University in Jerusalem is a valued contributor to Nietzsche studies and has been for many years. His contributions travel along a line of inquiry interrogating relationship between Nietzsche's notions about authenticity in light of his philosophy of power, his statements about Jews, and his reception. With Nietzsche in Zion, Golomb turns his attention to Nietzsche's presence in work of six of seminal thinkers. In a sense his emphasis has shifted from an analysis of what Nietzsche said about Jews and how this was appropriated to how Jewish intellectuals have appropriated Nietzschean thought. He promises a second volume that will investigate Nietzsche's continuing vibrancy in Israel. In his passionately written introduction, Golomb explains why this project has more at stake than just another exercise in cultural history. He takes issue with both what he calls the official Zionist Historiography and Historians of postmodern bent. Golomb takes traditional historians to task for ignoring personal objectives of early Zionists, and he chides New Historians for regarding Zionism's idea of 'new Jew' as a lamentable misstep in Jewish history. The latter he accuses of substituting a Palestinian narrative for a Jewish tale. I look forward to seeing how Golomb will steer between Scylla and Charybdis, but certainly Nietzsche in Zion offers us a solid depiction of what is at stake. The text is organized along following lines. First, a problem is established. Namely, how can a philosopher who criticized nationalism and called for emergence of Good European, who elevated individual and denigrated herd, who announced death of God thereby enabling a critique of essentialist notions and used this critique to interrogate fundamental tenets of European Enlightenment be useful to a group of thinkers whose main goal was tied to notions of a national identity? In other words, how could a set of ideas that seemingly elevate secular Jew of Diaspora contribute to emergent Zionist thought? For Golomb answer lies in what he sees as Nietzschean notion of authenticity as a creative act. He calls authenticity a subjective pathos and mentions that fiction is authenticity's most appropriate medium. Listed in Select Bibliography is Steven Aschheim's The Nietzsche Legacy in Germany: 1890-1990. In an elaboration of Aschheim's thesis that elasticity of Nietzschean categories leads to his work being grafted onto a variety of sometimes competing ideological perspectives, Golomb argues that early Zionists, as Jews in Grenzsituationen, lived in extreme existential conditions analogous to Zarathustra's solitude. …" @default.
