- W759091505 abstract "Approaches to increasing the involvement of masters-level counseling students in research are explored. The demographics of students enrolled in a M.A. in Counseling program at a mid-sized Christian university are briefly identified. Specific characteristics of the students, academic environment, and training model are described. Those must be addressed if students' involvement in research is to increase. Finally, I present suggestions for promoting student interest in research and research productivity. In this article, I will share some observations and experiences that describe our attempts to get Master of Arts in Counseling students interested in research. After providing some background information, I will briefly discuss some issues that must be attended to if efforts at increasing the students' interest are to be successful. I will, then, discuss some steps we take to increase the likelihood students will get involved and, finally, offer what I hope are helpful suggestions for promoting masters-level student interest in research and research productivity.BackgroundI teach in a Division of Graduate Counseling at a medium-sized Christian university located in the mid-west. Five graduate counseling programs are offered within the Division. Three of them are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).The demographics of our students can be accurately described as bimodal. A number of our students are recent graduates of undergraduate programs in psychology, social work, or education. An almost equal number are adult students, many of whom have little or no background in psychology, minimal exposure to research, and balance the demands of graduate study with the competing roles of parent, spouse, and employee. Most are strongly committed to a protestant, evangelical Christian worldview. A minority of our students hold to dogmatic, fundamentalist theological positions, whereas a few are best characterized as indiscriminately pro- religious. Finally, the expectations of scholarly activity are on the rise both within the division and the university at-large. Promotion of faculty members requires a minimum of four articles published in referred- journals. Book authorship and a consistent record of scholarly activity are expected of those seeking promotion to full professorship. These expectations occur in the context of a teaching load requirement of 21 semester hours per year of graduate courses with mean enrollments of approximately 10-20 students. In addition, demonstration of significant personal involvement in faith development, classroom effectiveness and innovation, and community service are expected. Besides supporting the incentives inherent in academic promotion, the institution also promotes research activities of faculty by making small grants available on a competitive basis. In addition, several divisional research assistantships (across the five programs within the Division) are funded. However, there is little provision of financial support for research and related travel expenses for our students. The Division is establishing a fund to which faculty and alumni can make donations to support the students' research efforts.Barriers to Increasing Research Interests among M. A. in Counseling StudentsSeveral obstacles to increasing M.A. students' interests in research can be identified. These include certain characteristics of the students, environment, and training model. While not considered insurmountable hurdles, we must be very mindful of how these operate if students are to become more than well-informed consumers of the counseling and psychological literature.Characteristics of the StudentsSelected demographic characteristics of our students were identified in the previous section. John Stackhouse, Jr. (2002), in his chapter titled Why Johnny Can't Produce Christian Scholarship, describes a number of factors related to the lack of Christian scholarship. …" @default.
