- W75997637 abstract "Until the end of the 19th century La Celestina was an unknown masterpiece. This does not necessarily mean that it lacked readers, although surely interest in it has quickened since the crucial year of '98. But it does mean that those few readers who did find their way to it had little idea of what they were reading. They held in their hands a book different in many ways from that which we read today. In the 19th century, in effect, the date, the principal sources, the best text, and the identity of the author were all unknown. It had even been forgotten that the version in 21 acts (1502) was a later expansion of the originai version in 16 acts (1499). As for its meaning, La Celestina was considered to be little more than a quaint, semianonimous work still read because of the broad picaresque wit of its central character or, at the very best, a seed work in the growth of European drama. In this half century we have learned a great deal. Thanks to the renaissance of philology and thanks to the prodigious labors of identification of Men?ndez Pelayo, Foulch? Delbosc, and so many others, we have been given the facts indis pensable for a deeper understanding and a higher estimation of Rojas' creation. We are at last in a position to study its literary problems seriously and with responsibility. It is this critical approach which I propose for today1) and in a somewhat new direction.
