- W76016645 abstract "Publisher Summary The presence in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) of circulating antibodies reacting with negatively charged phospholipids, that is, cardiolipin, has been associated with certain clinical symptoms primarily characterized by an increased tendency to venous and arterial thrombosis. To analyze the prevalence and clinical implication of anti-cardiolipin antibodies, this chapter discusses sera from 214 SLE-patients and compares the results with clinical and laboratory data. The production of anti-cardiolipin antibodies in patients with acute, presumably streptococcal infections was apparently temporary. The reason for this antibody production is unknown but may be compatible with that experimentally obtained after stimulation with polyclonal activators of bacterial origin. Anti-cardiolipin antibodies have been ascribed pathogenic importance by interacting with phospholipids in cell membranes and interfering with processes provoking platelet aggregation. The IFL reaction of sera containing anti-cardiolipin antibodies with mitochondria in tissue section is also described." @default.
