- W760388082 abstract "Boyer, Dominic. Spirit and System: Media, Intellectuals, and the Dialectic in Modern German Culture. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2005. 323 pp. $22.00 paperback. Dominic Boyer's analysis of the dialectic within modern German culture begins with its author tired, a little drunk, and mesmerized by the soft, pulsing, yellow lights of Autobahn 115. Talking with a journalist who had formerly worked for GDR Radio and now reports for the ARD about the compromises and challenges in his professional life then and now, Boyer makes it clear to the reader from the outset that this is a study of the concept of system that is keenly aware of its own position within a complex network of interests, ideas, and human relationships. Taking such an anthropological perspective on the notion of the dialectic through interviews paired with careful historical research leads Boyer on a path extending far beyond the reaches of the Autobahn. As a contribution to the anthropology of knowledge, the work is far-ranging in its analyses and nimble in its attempts to bring together findings from a broad array of sources in order to address the question of the dialectic not only as a theoretical tool, but as lived experience with important personal, political, and cultural consequences. Hence, Boyer's analysis ranges from Hegel and Horkheimer to Stasi and Stammtisch, as he traces the individual's relations to larger networks of power, knowledge, and norms from the late 19th century to the present. The ties and tensions between concept and lived reality give rise to the main object of dialectical knowledge. Boyer defines this as an active awareness of social dynamics, relations, and forms that center on perceived ontological tensions between the temporality of potentiality and actuality and between the spatiality of interiority and exteriority. Positioning the study as a performance of its own object of analysis, he traces the multiple lives of the dialectic from the perspective of both an actively engaged participant and critical observer. It is, in fact, the interplay of Boyer's carefully transcribed conversations with journalists with his subsequent analyses that provides the most compelling material for the reader's consideration of the issues at hand. As the often hilarious stories, bitter tirades, or emotional confidences of an extremely articulate and perceptive group of former GDR insiders are elaborated or dissected in the sometimes rather dissonant register of anthropological field notes, the reader is prompted to consider interviewer as much as interviewee in weighing the arguments Boyer advances. …" @default.
